Thoughts on David Carson

In my opinion, David Carson was more of a contemporary abstract expressionist, who used the medium of graphic design. 

Which brings us back to that ever shifting threshold of things that are considered art and things that are considered design.

There are qualities surrounding Sherlock Holmes that have captivated generations. What I personally love about him is that his power is presented as attainable. Anyone has the capacity to think like Sherlock Holmes.

However, what makes this character iconic and unforgettable, is not the representation of logic above all else, but his very human aspect of creativity.

That, coupled with the critical problem solving and analysis, has created – as one of the design greats, Massimo Vignelli, might say a “Visually powerful, intellectually elegant, but above all, timeless” literary character.
